Merry Christmas/A Todos Um Bom Natal!

A Todos Um Bom Natal!

As crianças dão as mãos

Natal Nas Asas Do Arco íRis

Where Do You Get Your Books? A Onde Você Obtêm Livros em Português

Where do you go to get children's Portuguese books? The local library, grandmother's house, Ebay? My biggest frustration with trying to share my love for reading in Portuguese  with my son keeps is finding resources to get books.  Do you know any resources that you would like to share?

Speaking of books, I wanted to let you know about a book we just re-discovered called Tenho em casa um cãozinho that I got for our son years ago. It's an amazing story about an abandoned dog,  full of rhythm. Let me know if you would like to borrow it.

My son is a visual learner and he loves interactive activities. I just found this great online resource. It  is an interactive activity called Vocabulário da Casa, a project of the Diversidade Linguistica na Escola Portuguesa.

Children can explore different rooms in the house and by clicking on the images, they can hear (Click in Ouvir) how the word sounds in Portuguese. Just for fun, the sound is also available in Crioulo de Cabo Verde, Mandarin, Ukcranian and even Guzarate (Gujarati)!

Check it out! Experimente!

Welcome to all other visitors who are interested in bilingual education in the US, reading to young children or the Portuguese language and the culture of Portuguese speaking countries.

I am thrilled that this blog has finally become a reality. My sincere thanks go out to my fellow parent, Isabel (International Librarian), for her faithful and dedicated efforts in setting up this blog. ---Isabel, what was once a bunch of crazy jumbled ideas of mine, is now a reality thanks to you

The launching of our blog, “Portugues na International Charter School” is huge step toward having a home for our own virtual Portuguese library of Children’s books. My hope is that it will also be a place where ICS parents can connect with each other and feel connected to what our children are learning at school. So I’ll be asking all who are willing, to share a bit about yourself so that we can get to know each other better and learn more about our diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Please feel free to respond in either Portuguese or English. We will do our best to translate posts. Also, it would be great to get volunteers to partner with any parents who don’t have internet access so that everyone is included.

Please let me know about any mistakes, if you don’t understand my posts or if you have suggestions to improve my translations. I’m not a native Portuguese speaker, so I’m sure to have mistakes and I’d love to have your support so that I will improve my Portuguese on this virtual journey. Keep in mind that have learned Portuguese by speaking with Brazilians, so it would be fun if you share how you might say the same thing in Portugal, Cape Verde, or Angola…

My hope is that this blog will inspire you to read more in Portuguese with your kids or to speak more Portuguese at home and in the community. If you don’t speak Portuguese, I hope that you will learn some Portuguese as your child learns Portuguese at school. Finally, I hope that this blog brings us together as a community of parents supporting their children’s education.

So, join me on this virtual journey! Please visit the blog often, explore the recommended links, and tell me about the Portuguese books that you and your child love the most. Don’t forget to sign up to the blog, so you will know when there are new posts.

A Minha Mae (My Mother)

Experimente!

Here is a book that you can read right here on the blog! This one does not have audio, but many do. It would be great to get a parent or a child to make an audio recording of the book and post it on the blog. It would be fun to have different readers. Try it with your child and let us know how it goes!

Listen to Jon read A Minha Mae Ouça a Jon ler esta história.

Isso deve funcionar agora! This should work now!
