Did you ever wonder which Portuguese dialect is best? Perhaps you've caught yourself laughing at or criticizing the way someone with a different dialect speaks. Here in Rhode Island (and at ICS), we have people with origins from many parts of the Portuguese speaking world. It is natural that we have our preferences because we are most comfortable with the dialect and culture that is most familiar to us. I have to admit that I find it more difficult conversing with someone who speaks European Portuguese or reading a children's book published in Portugal, than speaking with a Brazilian or reading a book from Brazil. This is because I have mostly learned Portuguese through Brazilians (thanks especially to my wife, Vera). Still, I am glad that my family is improving our Portuguese with help from the broader community of Portuguese speakers that we have met through ICS.
Recently, Andre M's mom, Bia, lent me a lovely children's book written by Dulce de Souza Goncalves, a friend of hers in Portugal. "Nunca Unca" tells a moving story about how two immigrant children from very different backgrounds become friends. Of course this book is a great reminder to us all how our lives can be enriched when we look at our differences as opportunities for growth. The book gave me the opportunity to ask my son's classmate, Andre M, to help us with some of the vocabulary (now we know that um berlinde’ (‘a marble’ in Portugal)--or ‘uma bola de gude’ in Brazil). Você já se perguntou qual dialeto Português é o melhor? Talvez você já se pegou rindo ou criticando a forma como alguém com um dialeto diferente fala. Aqui no estado de Rhode Island (e na ICS), temos pessoas com origens de muitas partes do mundo que fala Português. É natural que nós temos as nossas preferências, porque estamos muito confortáveis com o dialeto e cultura que é mais familiar para nós. Eu tenho que admitir que eu acho mais difícil conversar com alguém que fala Português Europeu ou ler um livro para crianças publicado em Portugal, do que falar com um brasileiro ou ler um livro do Brasil. Isso é porque eu tenho a maioria aprendeu Português através de brasileiros (graças especialmente à minha esposa, Vera). Ainda assim, estou feliz que minha família está melhorando o nosso Português, com a ajuda da grande comunidade de falantes do Português que encontramos por meio do ICS.

"Nunca UNCA"conta uma história comovente de dois crianças imigrantes de origens muito diferentes se tornam amigos. É claro que este livro é uma grande lembrete para todos nós como nossa vida pode ser enriquecido quando olhamos para as nossas diferenças como oportunidades de crescimento. O livro me deu a oportunidade para pedir ajuda do André M o (coleguinha do meu filho) com um pouco do vocabulário—e agora descubrimos que ‘um berlinde’ em Portugal – e a mesma coisa que ‘uma bola de gude’ no Brasil.
